Flagler County Adult School is committed to providing a positive learning environment for all students at all levels in an alternative setting. We believe that all children deserve to be treated with dignity in a safe, non-threatening climate so they can reach their full potential.


 

SCHOOL PROFILE DEMOGRAPHICS

Flagler County Adult School is located in the central Florida region on the east coast in a community of 70,000 people. There are nearly 10,000 school-age children of which approximately 3,000 are high school age. Of those 3,000, approximately 300 are enrolled in the adult program. All classes are offered in three large portable units comprised of 10,152 square feet. There are five full-time teachers, three part-time teachers, two paraprofessionals, two student service managers, one administrator, and two support personnel. The adult school is comprised of ten percent (10%) African American, one percent (1%) Asian, 15 percent Hispanic, and 74 percent European American students. The adult school offers all core curriculum and nine electives to complete a high school diploma requiring 24 credits. The adult school also offers a GED program. Dual enrollment is offered through Daytona Beach Community College (DBCC) and career dual enrollment (a vocational certificate program) through Adult Education PSAV programs.

QUALITY STAFF
Highly Qualified Administrators
Mary Gilbert, Director of the Flagler County Adult School, has a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership. She is a certified teacher and has been with Flagler County Adult School for over ten years.

Kevin McCarthy, Supervisor of Flagler County Adult School, has a Master's in Fine Arts Degree and has been working with Flagler County Adult School for over five years. Mr. McCarthy is a certified teacher and is currently earning his Master's in Educational Leadership.

Peter Jagocki, Flagler County Adult School Coordinator, has a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership. He is a certified teacher and has been with Flagler County Adult School for over ten years.

Joseph Capece, Flagler County Adult School Coordinator, has a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership. He is a certified teacher and has been with Flagler County Adult School for over ten years.

Teacher Mentoring
All new teachers are provided monthly meetings to discuss successful strategies pertaining to classroom management, effective data collection and reporting, and other issues confronting the new teacher.
School Wide Improvement Model
School Advisory Council
The School Advisory Council meets ten times yearly. The SAC assists in the preparation and evaluation of the school improvement plan, assists in the preparation of the annual budget, focuses on sharing information, reports on school progress and community relations, hosts facility tours, and adds additional input to help Flagler County Adult School achieve all student and program goals.
Communication with Parents
Letters are sent to each family at the beginning of the year. A newsletter is sent four times each year (at a minimum). All parents of children under 15 are called each day a student does not attend classes. Parents of students 16 and over are called after three absences. Staff meet with parents on a continual basis. A parent or guardian must meet with a Student Services Manager to register a student in adult school classes.
Extended Learning Opportunities
Flagler County Adult School offers the co-enrolled program to approximately 120 students for credit retrieval and/or grade improvement. Flagler County Adult School also provides career and technical certification programs for those wishing to attend.

Goal: Reading
Goal Statement: Improve reading scores a minimum of one grade level for all adult students scoring below 10.0 on the TABE.

Needs Assessment Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) Scores: All adult school students are given the TABE upon entry into the program and at the end of each semester (December and May).

Objective To increase TABE scores a minimum of one grade level for all Flagler County Adult School high school and GED students who score below a 10.0. Goal to be accomplished by May 30, 2006.
Strategies Reading pull out classes by ABE instructor. Enroll all 9.0 and below in Reading IA.

Goal: Parental Involvement
Goal Statement: To increase parental involvement with adult student education

Needs Assessment Research indicates that students of parents directly involved in the student's education perform better academically than student's whose parents are not actively involved in the student's education.

Objective To increase the number of parents participating in choices offered to students.
Strategies Parents are required to enroll students in adult programs to help determine the best placement of the student (adult high school, ABE or GED). A newsletter is sent home four times per year (at a minimum) to involve parents in the school. Parents will be encouraged to attend a Family Day picnic for parents and students.
